The Department for Health has confirmed there has been 10,972 new cases of COVID-19 as of 9am on Sunday.
It is the lowest daily increase and first time cases had dropped below five figures in more than four months.
Government data shows the UK recorded 6,968 cases of coronavirus on October 2.
This afternoon, it was confirmed 258 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus.
Since the start of the pandemic, 4,038,078 positive coronavirus cases have been recorded in the UK, and 117,166 people have died.
The decline in the number of daily infections comes as the Government confirmed more than 15 million Britons have been given their first COVID-19 vaccine.
This is a developing news story, more to follow.
