Japan’s only Abt railway, the historic Ikawa line is popular with hikers and climbers bound for the Southern Alps national park, or looking to soak their aches away in the hot springs dotted along it. Offering a sharp intake of Alpine air, windows open on to dizzying vistas over reservoirs and gorges from railway bridges – including Seki-no-Sawa Bridge, once the tallest bridge in Japan – as the track climbs to Ikawa. At more than 2,000ft above sea level, it’s the highest station in Shizuoka prefecture.
