'Toxic effect': FDA announces recall of hand sanitisers over risk of cancer and blindness

Date:

Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizure, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.

“Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk for methanol poisoning, young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as a alcohol substitute are most at risk,” the body explained.

While the risks of methanol are substantial, the health body adds that chemical benzene is equally dangerous to human health.

Unlike benzene, however, methanol has no cancer-causing properties.
