Tottenham's Harry Kane matched superb Prem record set by ex-Arsenal star in Brighton win

Harry Kane continued to rewrite the Premier League’s record books in Tottenham’s 2-0 triumph over struggling Brighton on Wednesday night. The Spurs striker netted the second in his side’s success over the Seagulls to achieve a number of records, including a remarkable honour previously held by Arsenal and Manchester United hitman Robin van Persie.

Cristian Romero opened the scoring at the Amex Stadium, although he appeared to know little about it. With 37 minutes played, Tottenham launched an attack down the left, which ended up at the feet of January signing Dejan Kulusevski.

The Swede continued his bright start to life at Spurs, sweeping a first-time effort towards goal, which subsequently glanced in off team-mate Romero. Kane then struck the second to make yet more Premier League history.

The England captain raced on to a fine through-ball from another recent recruit, Rodrigo Bentancur, before clinically sliding a left-footed strike past stranded Seagulls’ stopper Robert Sanchez. A crucial three points reignite Tottenham’s hopes for a top-four finish and an all-important Champions League qualification spot, and saw Kane add to his exploits.

The Tottenham forward now boasts the record for the most away goals in Premier League history with his latest strike the 95th occasion he has netted on the road. The goal also saw him surpass Frank Lampard and move into fifth on the Premier League’s list of all-time scorers, with 178.

However, that’s not all. Perhaps most impressively, Kane’s strike at the Amex means he has equalled Van Persie’s remarkable feat of hitting the most Premier League goals with his weaker foot.

According to Opta, the pair top the standings having struck 39 times with their less dominant leg. Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero sits in third on 34, Romelu Lukaku has hit 33 and Thierry Henry, Andy Cole, Jamie Vardy and Heung-min Son have all managed the feat 31 times.

Speaking after the match, Antonio Conte said of Kane: “To have a striker like him makes us stronger but at the same time his feeling now is positive because he knows he will have chances. I think he deserves to win something in his career because we are talking about a fantastic player.”
