President Abraham Lincoln once described a hypocrite as “the man who murdered his own parents, and then pleaded for mercy on the grounds that he was an orphan.”
I thought of this when I saw the response by Georgia Democratic would-be governor Stacey Abrams to being caught not wearing a COVID mask as she sat surrounded by young schoolkids who were masked just as she’s demanded they should be.
To be fair to Abrams, she caught herself, quote-tweeting a damning series of photos taken at Glennwood Elementary School outside Atlanta after they were posted by the school’s principal, Dr. Holly Brookins.
She gushed that the visit had been “spectacular, delightful, and outstanding.”
In fact, it was a spectacular act of political self-harm that revealed outstanding double standards and has given her rivals endless delight.
The image that went viral, and which will surely haunt Abrams for the rest of her campaign, shows her sitting cross-legged on the floor with a massive grin as everyone behind her, including children and adults, is masked.
Within seconds of it being posted, all hell broke loose on social media about the shameful shamelessness of yet another high-profile liberal politician doing the very opposite of what she’s been screaming at everyone else to do in this pandemic.
And then came the cover-up.
First, Abrams deleted her quote-tweet.
Then Brookins appeared to delete her entire Twitter account.
But that didn’t work because the internet keeps receipts.
So, as the furor grew, Abrams resorted to Plan B of the Meghan “Princess Pinocchio” Markle woke playbook on how to deflect blame for wrongdoing: She accused everyone who criticized her hideously two-faced antics of being racially insensitive!
In a comically tone-deaf statement issued through her campaign, she raged: “It is shameful that our opponents are using a Black History Month reading event for Georgia children as the impetus for a false political attack.”
Then she furiously played the whataboutery card for good measure, sneering: “It is pitiful and predictable that our opponents continue to look for opportunities to distract from their failed records when it comes to protecting public health during the pandemic.”
Oh, the irony … There was only one person who was pitifully and predictably trying to distract from her failure to protect public health — HER!
What Abrams didn’t address was why she failed to wear a mask or why she’s such a flaming hypocrite.
Her campaign manager, Lauren Groh-Wargo, tweeted a tortuous attempt at a defense, saying Abrams only took her mask off “so she could be heard by students watching remotely and for photos.”
She added: “Stacey trusts science and supports masking in schools as it’s the current CDC recommendation.”
What utter poppycock.
If Stacey really trusted the science, she would have worn a mask to protect both herself and those around her.
By declining to do so, she revealed that she doesn’t trust the science.
Just as Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti didn’t trust the science when he so absurdly claimed he held his breath to avoid getting COVID as he posed mask-less with Magic Johnson last week.
Just as San Francisco Mayor London Breed didn’t trust the science when, after issuing one of the strictest indoor mask mandates in her state, she was seen partying without one in one of the city’s jazz clubs.
Just as California Gov. Gavin Newsom didn’t trust the science when he broke his own COVID rules to dine with friends at the fancy French Laundry restaurant.
And just as restriction-loving Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez didn’t trust the science when she partied maskless in Florida.
All these top Democrats did the opposite of what they said in public about “following the science” because in their hearts, they know a lot of the science in this crisis has been seriously flawed.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, who so arrogantly described himself as being science itself, initially said masks were useless protection against COVID — now he says they’re essential.
Little wonder people have lost faith in blindly “following the science.”
But where this mantra gets unforgivable is when it’s used to insist that young children must continue to wear masks all day at school when it’s now abundantly clear there is no imperative need for them to do so.
For vaccinated people, the dominant Omicron variant has turned this pandemic from a deadly nightmare into nothing more serious than a flu outbreak, and children are the most immune from COVID’s effects anyway.
To keep them muzzled like this, when not only does the science clearly not justify it, but politicians who claim it does ignore the science themselves, is bordering on child abuse and has to stop.
Stacey Abrams claimed the critics of her hypocrisy are “pathetic, transparent and silly.”
But the only pathetic, transparent and silly one in this unedifying story is the gubernatorial candidate preaching one thing and doing another.
And for her to then play the race card to try to get herself off the rap is as reprehensible as her outrageous hypocrisy.
There is one positive: Through her disgraceful behavior, Stacey Abrams has exposed the sham of making America’s children continue to wear masks in school.
They must be liberated from this unscientific madness as a matter of urgency.
