The Saints’ replacement for Sean Payton is coming from within.
Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen will be the Saints’ new coach, according to ESPN, after Payton walked away two weeks ago.
Allen, 49, has been New Orleans’ defensive coordinator since 2015. He was the Raiders’ head coach for two-plus seasons from 2012-14, going 4-12 in each of his first two years before being fired after an 0-4 start in his third season.
The Saints interviewed Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, who last week filed a class action lawsuit against the NFL and its teams alleging racial discrimination. Saints special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi was also in consideration for the head coaching job.
During a press conference announcing his departure from the team on Jan. 25, Payton called Allen a “great candidate” for the coaching job.
