Authorities in New Orleans have put a damper on Mardi Gras festivities, effectively canceling the Pre-Lenten revelry this weekend for fear it will lead to an upswing in COVID-19 cases.

All parades in the city have been canceled, and a bar closure order that went into effect on Friday will be enforced through Fat Tuesday, according to police chief Shaun Ferguson.

Authorities believe that Mardi Gras celebrations in the city last year led to spiraling coronavirus infection rates.

At a news conference Friday, Ferguson warned that police will be patrolling the city, looking for those who violate bar closures.

“If you think you’re going to be that bad actor and get away with that, I would ask that you think otherwise,” he said.
