New car tax proposals could save drivers money by paying per mile – 'fairer system'

Flat rate tax punishes those who drive less, rather than rewarding them, By Miles argues.

The new method would work by asking drivers to pay an annual fee based on the odometer reading from their MOT certificate.

Following a routine MOT, the motorist would simply need to log in to an online portal and pay for their recorded miles.

The charging scale would be graded to discourage higher mileage road users, with the first 1,000 miles per annum free to all drivers.
