Mick Schumacher backs Max Verstappen as he plots to copy Red Bull star

Mick Schumacher believes childhood friend and fellow Formula One star Max Verstappen deserves his recent success. The pair spent much of their formative years together and Schumacher hopes to one day emulate Verstappen by winning a World Championship.

Schumacher and Verstappen are the sons of famous F1 fathers – Michael and Jos, respectively. The sons would often spend weekends together and 2021 world champion Verstappen recently revealed he has happy memories of being in Schumacher Snr’s company.

The 24-year-old controversially won his first title last year. The Red Bull star pipped Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the final race in Abu Dhabi to prevent the Mercedes driver winning a record eighth World Championship – which would have taken him above Michael Schumacher.

A strongly contestable decision by then-FIA race director Michael Masi helped Verstappen win, but Schumacher, 23, believes his long-term friend deserved his victory. “Obviously, I’m happy for him. He deserves it. He’s been in a sport for some time now, and he’s always done well, so it’s interesting to see what the future holds for him, but also for me,” the Haas racer told RacingNews365.

“I was three or four years old at the time. I just knew this was Uncle Michael who was very nice. Who was an extremely big family man. But I never saw him as a record world champion, I wasn’t aware of that,” he told F1 Insider.

“You can see that in the old photos and videos that we have at home. Mick or Gina was always there. It was great. I still have positive memories of those weekends today.

“We always went karting in two-seaters. Michael with Mick or Gina, my father with me. But when it got too dangerous, the fathers quickly took over!”
