Earlier this month, the UK applied to join the CPTPP on the first anniversary of Britain’s official departure from the EU. However, former Washington aide and commentator Peter Rough warned the US was unlikely to join the deal – dealing a blow to Boris Johnson’s hopes of a quick US trade deal and closer relationship.

Mr Rough told “I think it’s a great idea for Britain to join, and there’s a lot of momentum and talk in Washington that this would be a great way to counter the Chinese trade bloc, the RCEP [Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership], in South East Asia.

“More generally, it will set the rules of the road and the standards for 21st Century trade, as it will be a big trading bloc.

“But I just don’t hear a lot of energy, a lot of language out of the Biden administration, that’s eager to pick up big trading organisations like this.” readers have hit out at Mr Biden in response, saying an American snub would not impact Britain’s trade dealings.

One reader wrote: “The UK will sign trade deals beneficial to the UK whether the USA, EU, Russia, China or anyone else does or doesn’t approve.

“The UK hasn’t escaped the clutches of the EU mafia to be bullied or threatened by the new Biden administration that’s for sure!”

Another added: “‘Biden’ is dangerous because we will never know who is actually pulling his strings.

“The Pacific partnership is likely to be a good move for the UK.

Another reader said the CPTTP trade membership will demonstrate a post-Brexit Britain is “open and keen for global business”.

They said: “Apart from the years being stuck inside the EU, Britain has always been a strong trading nation and application for the excellent CPTPP trade membership will consolidate Britain’s position.

“It will demonstrate that Britain, post Brexit, is open and keen for global business.

“The USA will come to its own political conclusions in its own time.

“Meanwhile, Britain will advance quickly and increase its trade partnerships unfettered by the slow, declining EU bureaucracy.”

Others claimed Mr Biden is “no friend to the UK”, with one person said: “Joe Biden is no friend of the UK, until the US gets into another Middle Eastern war and wants us to cover their back, again.”

Another person said the UK needs to “strengthen its ties with the Commonwealth”.

They said: “The UK needs to strengthen its ties with the Commonwealth.

“Politicians have failed to realise it’s significance.

“Now UK’s main ally the USA under Biden will throw the UK under the bus.”

The CPTPP was first negotiated by President Barack Obama, who selected Mr Biden as his Vice President.

The deal never got past Congress due to Mr Trump’s decision to pull out of it in 2017.
