Two-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso has been spotted leaving hospital in Switzerland four days after suffering a fractured jaw in a cycling accident near his home. The 39-year-old was struck by a car on Thursday while training for the upcoming F1 season, which is set to begin at the end of next month, and promptly had reconstructive surgery to reposition his jaw before being discharged on Monday.

Alonso is preparing to make his return to the sport after a two-year absence, having agreed to drive for Alpine alongside Esteban Ocon next season.

The Spaniard will race for the French outfit, formerly known as Renault, on a two-year deal and took part in the team’s post-season testing programme in Abu Dhabi in December.

He is not expected to miss the first Grand Prix of the new campaign at the Bahrain International Circuit on March 28.

Alpine issued an update via Twitter on Monday confirming the news of Alonso’s departure from hospital.

“After a period of 48 hours observation at hospital in Switzerland, Fernando Alonso has now been discharged to continue his recovery at home,” the statement reads.

“He will now have a short period of complete rest before progressively resuming training to undertake preparation for the start of the season.

“As always, thank you for your best wishes for Fernando’s recovery.”

Local police have revealed in an official report that Alonso was hit by a motorist attempting to turn into a supermarket car park near Lugano, Switzerland.

“According to an initial reconstruction and for reasons that the police investigation will have to establish, while making a left turn manoeuvre to enter a supermarket parking lot, there was a collision with a 39-year-old Spanish citizen, who was riding his bicycle,” the report read.

“He was passing the column of stationary vehicles in the opposite direction on the right. The collision occurred against the right side of the car.

“On the spot intervened agents of the cantonal police and, in support, of the police of the city of Lugano as well as the rescuers of the Green Cross of Lugano who, after having given the first attention to the cyclist, transported him by ambulance to the hospital.”

Alonso will be hoping to hit the heights of yesteryear in 2021 with Alpine, with the veteran having clinched two consecutive Drivers’ Championship titles with the Renault team in 2005 and 2006.

He then raced alongside Lewis Hamilton at McLaren before a brief return to Renault, which ended in 2009 when Ferrari came calling.

Alonso failed to win another championship with the Prancing Horse and left in 2015 for a largely disappointing second spell at McLaren.

The Spaniard is one Indy 500 win short of completing the fabled ‘Triple Crown’ of motorsport, having already scooped the Monaco Grand Prix and 24 Hours of Le Mans during his illustrious career.

He has entered the iconic race on three occasions, with his best result coming in the form of a 21st-placed finish last year.
