Desperate Tesco customer filmed fuelling car with cooking oil as petrol prices surge

Date:

The man is pictured next to the rear of his vehicle alongside a supermarket trolley filled with bottles of oil. He then starts to unscrew them one by one, pouring the oil into his motor. Mark Rainford, who saw and filmed the act at Tesco in Congleton, Cheshire, on Tuesday, admitted it made him chuckle.

But others online said the car wouldn’t function as the oil will damage the engine.

One man wrote: “Don’t go putting veg oil in your car or van unless it’s old type diesel engine . You’ll f*** your engine up, it’s too thick and you’ll blow the diesel pump up. And especially don’t put it in a petrol car/van.”

Another Facebook user said: “It’s going to be a busy night for the AA when everyone tries this in their modern diesel engines.”

A third posted: “To use veg oil you need a heater in the fuel system and also the glycerine in the oil will eventually clog up the fuel system and homogenise the engine lubrication oil. The only way it works is to convert it to biodiesel using toxic and dangerous chemicals.”

Mark, whose video has had more than 1,400 shares, told Cheshire Live: “I filmed it and as I walked past him he was taking all the tops off the bottles first, that’s what made me laugh.

“He had clearly thought it through.”

Diesel prices this week rose to a record high of £1.76 per litre, while petrol was recorded to be at £1.64 a litre.

The cost of living is increasing too, with inflation and energy bills set to rise sharply from next month.

However, the motor industry advises drivers against using cooking oil as an alternative to traditional diesel or petrol.

It is thick and sticky and so won’t flow properly through the engines of most vehicles. It will therefore damage the engine, experts say.

The process of turning cooking oil into biodiesel, and therefore an efficient source of fuel, is called transesterification.

But Cater Oils, a cooking oil delivery firm, advises that this should be left to the experts.

It says on its website people “really shouldn’t” just pour the oil directly from the bottle into their cars.
