Anthony Fauci FINALLY admits he should have been ‘much more careful’ with his words during the pandemic — after flip-flopping on masks and exaggerating vaccine figures to boost uptake

Dr Anthony Fauci has finally admitted he got key aspects of his Covid public health advice wrong.

America’s top infectious disease expert said he should have been ‘much more careful’ with his words early in the pandemic.

He told a medical conference on Tuesday that he wished he had been more open with the public about the uncertainties at the time.

Dr Fauci was heavily criticized for flip-flopping on face masks and exaggerating the herd immunity target to encourage more people to get vaccinated.

He also quashed discussion about Covid’s origin and denied virus-tinkering experiments went on at the Wuhan facility at the center of the lab leak theory.

The outgoing White House medical adviser was speaking at the University of Southern California’s Center for Health Journalism on Tuesday.

When asked if he wished he had communicated better during the pandemic, he said: ‘The answer is yes… I mean, my goodness, no one’s perfect. Certainly I am not.’

He added: ‘When I go back in the early months, I probably should have tried to be much, much more careful in getting the message to repeat the uncertainty of what we’re going through.

‘If you wanted to say if we knew then that this virus under the radar screen was transmitting in a way that was not fully appreciated and any of us would have said, “you know, we’ve had five cases in the country, we need to shut down,” people would have looked at us like we were crazy.’

Dr Fauci, will leave his official post at the end of the year. His career in public health spans decades.

He has also been the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a research agency within the sprawling National Institutes of Health, since 1984.

Disseminating public health advice has been treacherous over the past couple of years, made worse by the media’s ability to extract sound bytes and manipulate them to mislead the audience.

Dr Fauci said: ‘It is really unfortunate, that that’s the world in which we live, in that it’s a bunch of sound bites, sound bites that sometimes get cut in half and get misinterpreted.’

‘Someone could always make mischief by clipping out a few words,’ he said.

Dr Fauci has often been lambasted for an early failure to encourage the general public to wear masks, which he and then-Surgeon General Jerome Adams initially advised should be reserved for healthcare professionals on the frontlines.

‘Last year Tony Fauci and I famously, prematurely, & wrongly advised against masks. I felt it was the best call at the time, but now regret it,’ Adams said last summer on Twitter.

Dr Fauci later became a staunch supporter of compulsory masking in public indoor spaces and maintains that, while mandates have ended, the masks are not going away permanently.

Dr Fauci was also hasty in assuring the public that being fully vaccinated drastically reduced the risk of becoming infected. Breakthrough infections are commonplace, albeit usually fairly mild, and immunity conferred by vaccines wanes over time.

Dr Fauci also quelled dissenting voices in the scientific community that supported the theory that the coronavirus was the product of a lab leak in Wuhan, China. Emails obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request revealed that Dr. Fauci and former NIH leader Francis Collins shared concerns about the virus’ link to the Wuhan lab.
